Shredded Dough Dessert with Sweet Syrup

  • 1 pound Shredded Dough
  • ½ c. Butter
  • 1 ½ c. Mozzarella Cheese
  • 3 c. Sugar for syrup
  • 3 c. Water for syrup
  • Pistachio Nuts, crushed for garnish

  1. Place Shredded Dough into a large bowl.
  2. Melt Butter and pour over all the Shredded Dough. Use your hands to mix well.
  3. Split the Shredded Dough into small pieces by pulling them apart with your fingers.
  4. Grease a 9×13-inch pan or large round, glass dish.
  5. Spread half of the Shredded Dough evenly into pan and press down using your hands.
  6. Slice or shred Mozzarella over the Shredded Dough evenly and cover with the remaining half of the Shredded Dough.
  7. Again press down to compress using your hands.
  8. Bake at 400oF until the top turns light brown. Remove from oven and turn upside down with the help of a flat tray.
  9. Again bake the other side until light brown.
  10. While the Künefe is baking in the oven place a pot on the stove and mix Sugar and Water. Bring to a boil. Then turn the heat off.
  11. After removing Künefe from the oven pour the syrup all over the hot Künefe and set aside for 5-7 minutes before serving.
  12. After the syrup has been absorbed slice the Künefe as you like and garnish each piece with crushed Pistachio Nuts.

* This picture also shows kaymak (clotted cream from water buffalo) on top which makes a tasty addition, if available. I have made this dessert many times in the States and is loved by all. You may need to purchase the Shredded Dough from a local Turkish, Greek or Mediterranean Store as it isn’t something typically sold in US supermarkets.

This is one of those heavenly desserts. The crispy outside makes the warm, gooey middle that much tastier! It’s so delicious, and I was pleasantly surprised to discover it’s not nearly as difficult to make as I would have expected.

This is a delicious dessert – especially if you have a sweet tooth, like me.

I agree, Janae! I’m so glad you could come taste it in Turkey. Now you have a recipe to make in the US and enjoy again! 🙂
